Controller Chip for Thermal Printer (like Matsushita EPL1604T2 or EPL1801S2E)

Hey there!

Did anyone manage to get a cheap thermal printhead like Matsushita 
EPL1604T2 or EPL1801S2E to work or does anyone know a controller chip 
that does all the temperature-, pixel- and power-compensation?

They are really cheap in Germany (3 Euro) [0] but reading the datasheet 
[1] promises a lot of work, because you have to compensate lots of 
parameters to get good print results.

Unfortunately i only found others searching for help and nobody who 
managed to get the printheads to work :/

Any help appreciated!
