IO-Link Device Transceiver MAX14821 - Wofür SPI und UART?

Hallo,

ich habe eine Frage zum MAX14821, falls jemand schon mit dem gearbeitet 
hat. Wofür hat dieser Chip einen UART und SPI-Anschluss? Laut Schaltbild 
ist die IO-Link-Schnittstelle direkt mit dem UART-Rx verbunden, nur eben 
auf 3,3V Ebene runtergebrochen.

Wofür aber der SPI-Anschluss? Im Schaltbild steht Status and 
Configuration, aber warum geschieht das nicht auch über den UART?

"An  SPI™  interface  allows  configuration  and  monitoring  of  the 
device.  Extensive  alarm  conditions  are  detected  and  communicated 
through  the  IRQ output  and  the  SPI  interface. The device features 
reverse-polarity, short-circuit, and  thermal  protection.  All  power 
lines  are  monitored  for  undervoltage conditions."

Weil diese Schnittstelle transparent sein wird: Alles was auf der einen 
Seite reingeht, kommt auf der anderen Seite gewandelt raus.
