Hallo,

ich möchte nachträglich die matplotlib für python (Version3.8) 
installieren.
Leider wirft der Interpreter folgende Fehlermeldung raus:

>>> python -m pip install -U matplotlib
  File "<stdin>", line 1
    python -m pip install -U matplotlib
SyntaxError: invalid syntax

Ruft Du python aus python auf? Der ">>>"-Prompt sieht danach aus.

Das

pip install matplotlib

gehört in die normale Kommandozeile/CMD/Bash/ ... also NICHT vorher 
Python starten.
