Could anyone please tell me may I connect 100mA hitachi compatible LCD
to STK500? I know how to connect it (4-bit mode), but I do not know if I
can drive enough mA to LCD. I found only in one place in STK500 help
that it can drive 500mA, but it is not very clear. I guess that someone
has tried this, so please let me know before I burn something. And yes,
I am a newbie :)

Forgive me for english, but I follow this forum with Google online
translator and I do not know german.

THANKS!

Hi Avra,
normaly you dont need 500mA for a display. If the display has a LED
backlight turn it off. The backlight needs 99% of the current.
If you use the display in 4 Bit mode you only need 7 port bits, in 8 bit
mode you need 11 port bits. So if you have enough ports you can use the
8 bit mode.
In 8 bit mode connect the 8 data bits from the display to one port of
the controller, the other pins from the display to free port pins.
The only difference between 4 and 8 bit mode is simple. If you want to
use 4 bit mode you first have to send a command to tell the display to
switch in 4 bit mode and you must send all command in two nibble (4
bit).

I hope this will help you a little bit.

Best regards
Markus
