STK500 + ext. Qaurz [Mega88]

Use "Ext. Clock; Start-up time: 6 CK + 64 ms;".

While using the STK500 you must use "Ext. Clock"
or "Int. RC Osc.". While using the internal RC
oscillator, as a precaution, remove the jumper XTAL1.

Stimmt Ext. Clock wirklich?

Muss es nicht ein Ext. Low Frequ. Crystal oder ein Ext. Full-Swing 
Crystal sein?

Ok hab ich gemacht, wenn ich den Quartz aber rausnehme und das STK 
wieder einschalte funktionierts trotzdem?

Kann mir den keiner sagen wie die Einstellungen dafür sein müssen?

Laut Dautenblatt sollte es doch so funktionieren:

XTAL1 gesetzt und OSCSEL auf 2-3 gejumpert

Dazu die Fuses im Mega88 auf

Wenn ich aber den Quarz aus dem STK rausnehme kann ich immernoch auf den 
Controller zugreifen.

If the ATmega88 works with the jumper XTAL1 removed,
then it is 100% sure that your are using the internal
RC oscillator of the chip. Note that when you buy a
chip, the internal RC oscillator is enabled by default.
Did you try to READ the fuse bytes with AVR Studio?

Yes, i use AVR Studio. I tried to read the FuseBits with XTAL1 Jumper 
and OSCSEL Jumper at 1 [2-3]. It worked! If these are the settings for 
external crystal use => without crystal it should not work..but worked 
too.

If yes, then you are using the internal RC
oscillator of the chip.

No, it don't work without XTAL1 Jumper.

The oscillator circuit where the crystal is connected
oscillates also without a crystal. (See the picture in
one of my previous posts where you can see the block
schematic diagram).

Without crystal, the output frequency is about 270kHz
on my STK500.

Just leave a crystal in the socket and this will fix
the problem.

Ok, just for sure:

XTAL1 Jumper: [1-2]
OSCSEL Jumper: 1 [2-3]

ATMega88 Fuses: Ext. Clock

If this settings are activated the uC will use the Clock from my 7MHz 
Crystal.
