Hey I recently turned my Raspberry PI 2 into a NAS (also reachable through the www) via proftpd. It works just fine but i noticed that Windows (where i attached the pi NAS as network drive) still downloads the files i access to the temp folder rather then opening it as it would on a local drive. This is somewhat a problem especially if you want to launch a program stored on the NAS as it would have to download it first but then it still has no access to other parts of the program (DLLs for example) also every movie stored on the NAS has to be downloaded first, in order to be played. Is there a better way then FTP to accomplish a NAS without the need to download it first but still have the ability to access it from the internet? (by that i mean that windows is directly accessing the PI NAS like a local drive.) Thanks for every answer in advance. ps.: sorry for any typos but my english writing isn't the best ;) pps.: I wasn't sure where to put this topic. Hope i am not too Offtopic here - GenUltra758

Usually DLLs are loaded first, and then the executable, and then the operating system decides, which of the 1000s of DLLs is required for the executable to run.
it said it couldnt acces file "ftp://servername/folder/filename" also upon opening/starting the program windows was downloading it to a temp folder, which is what i dont want it to do. edit: the thing about the DLLS was a example anyway. it generally failed to load any file required for the exe to run properly
Hi, google for "nas". google for "linux". google for "windows". google for "file system". mfg
Hi, google for "unix". google for "nfs". google for "windows7 nfs". google for "why you should not use rasp pi as a nas". mfg
Actually Samba is only half the truth: You also want a VPN to access your Samba shares over the Internet.

u should know: nfs is included in windows 7
no need for stinking cifs/samba.
ok, thanks to everyone for all the answers. i will try it out once i've got time for it. i might post an update if it worked

Use OwnCloud! https://owncloud.org/ It's available for Raspberry Pi (even thrue the repositories) and includes all the goodies you ask for. Easy to setup with a widespread community. Clients for all major OS are also available, and you get an nice GUI to control permissions and other tasks. Harry

I think you should not create a publicly reachable samba server.
